A fire pit needs at least 2 metres of clearance from your property line, your house, your garage, and any fence. That distance is measured from the edge of the fire itself, not the patio or deck it sits on.

How big can the fire actually be?
The fire itself is capped at 1m × 1m, and it has to burn inside a container no taller than 0.75m — or be built directly on a non-combustible surface if it isn't contained. A spark screen is mandatory whenever the fire is burning unattended-adjacent, which in practice means every backyard fire pit needs one on hand.
What can I actually burn?
Clean, dry firewood only. The Calgary Fire Department's rules explicitly ban burning garbage, leaves, construction waste, treated or painted wood, and anything else that isn't seasoned firewood — not a suggestion, a rule with a fine attached.
When am I allowed to have a fire, and does a fire ban change that?
Burning is restricted to midnight to Sunday–Thursday and 1am on Friday–Saturday under the standard rules, and a fire ban — checked at calgary.ca/firebans — overrides all of it. Fines for violating the fire pit rules or burning during a ban run up to $5,000.
How does a fire pit integrate safely with a deck or patio?
The 2m setback from any structure means a wood-burning fire pit generally can't sit directly on a wood deck — it needs to be sited on the ground, on a patio, or on a non-combustible pad far enough from the deck itself to clear the rule. We plan the fire pit's placement as part of the same design as your deck or patio, not as an afterthought once the rest is built, so the clearance and the layout work together instead of fighting each other.
How does the 3D render process work?
You get a 3D render showing the fire pit's placement relative to your house, fence, and any deck or patio, checked against the setback rules before we build anything, and you approve it.
