It depends heavily on size, enclosure material, and whether it's a simple ring or a built-in masonry structure with seating. We checked for a single verified Calgary-specific wood-burning figure before quoting one and didn't find one solid enough to stand behind, so we'd rather give you a real number for your actual design than a padded range that doesn't hold up.

How far does a fire pit need to be from my property line?

A fire pit needs at least 2 metres of clearance from your property line, your house, your garage, and any fence. That distance is measured from the edge of the fire itself, not the patio or deck it sits on.

How big can the fire actually be?

The fire itself is capped at 1m × 1m, and it has to burn inside a container no taller than 0.75m, or be built into the ground or on non-combustible material like brick or stone. A fire-safe mesh screen or spark guard is required by law on every backyard fire pit, not just a recommendation, and the pit can't sit under any trees, branches, or other material that could catch fire.

When am I allowed to have a fire, and does a fire ban change that?

Burning is restricted to midnight to Sunday–Thursday and 1am on Friday–Saturday under the standard rules, and a fire ban — checked at calgary.ca/firebans — overrides all of it. Fines for violating the fire pit rules or burning during a ban run up to $5,000.

How does a fire pit integrate safely with a deck or patio?

The 2m setback from any structure means a wood-burning fire pit generally can't sit directly on a wood deck — it needs to be sited on the ground, on a patio, or on a non-combustible pad far enough from the deck itself to clear the rule. Should I build wood-burning or gas?

Wood-burning has no permit to wait on, but has to comply with the Fire Department's rules once it's built. Gas needs a Safety Codes Act permit and a certified gas fitter, but starts and stops on demand.
