Gas vs. Wood-Burning Fire Pits in Calgary: The Real Trade-Off
The choice between a gas fire pit and a wood-burning fire pit in Calgary isn't just about ambiance or cost — the two sit under completely different regulatory systems, and that changes your timeline more than the fuel choice itself.
Does a gas fire pit need a permit in Calgary?
Yes. Installing, altering, or adding to a gas system requires a Gas Permit under Alberta's Safety Codes Act, and a City safety codes officer inspects the installation. The gas connection itself has to be done by an Alberta-certified journeyman gas fitter — a homeowner can only pull the permit themselves if they are one.

Does a wood-burning fire pit need a permit?
No permit application exists for one — but it has to comply with the Calgary Fire Department's rules at all times: setback, size, a legally-required spark screen, approved fuel only, and burn hours. There's no inspection before you build it, but there are fines up to $5,000 if it doesn't comply once it's burning. See our full Calgary fire pit rules guide for the complete list.

| Wood-burning | Gas | |
|---|---|---|
| Permit | None — code compliance instead | Gas Permit required (Safety Codes Act) |
| Who can install | Any contractor, code rules still apply | Alberta-certified journeyman gas fitter |
| Inspection | None before building; enforcement is complaint-driven | City safety codes officer inspects the install |
| Non-compliance risk | Fines up to $5,000 if reported | Installing without a permit violates the Safety Codes Act |
So which one should I actually build?
Wood-burning is the faster path to a finished fire pit — no permit to wait on, though it still has to be sited and built to the Fire Department's rules correctly the first time. Gas is a longer process up front, involving a licensed gas fitter and a City inspection, but it starts and stops on demand and doesn't carry the same wood-supply or ash-cleanup upkeep. We build wood-burning fire pits ourselves and coordinate the gas trade for a gas installation as part of the same project, rather than leaving you to find and schedule a separate gas fitter.
Ready to add a fire pit?
See our Calgary fire pits page for how we integrate one with a deck or patio build, or our Calgary fire pit rules guide for the full wood-burning rulebook. Book a design consultation and tell us which fuel you're leaning toward — the permit picture is part of the plan from day one either way.
