Do I need a permit to build a fence in Calgary?
Most Calgary fences don't need a permit: you only need one above 2m (6'-6") in the rear yard, 1.2m (4'-0") in the front yard, or 0.75m (2'-6") inside a corner visibility triangle. If your design doesn't meet the land use bylaw, a development permit takes 10 to 12 weeks — so a fence you want up by May needs that answer by February.

What should you check before you build a fence in Calgary?
Get utility locates before any post hole is dug, and confirm exactly where your property line is, since a fence even a few inches over it can mean a dispute or forced removal. On a shared boundary, Alberta's Line Fence Act lets either owner start a cost-sharing arrangement, so talk to your neighbour first.

When you compare quotes, ask each builder how deep the posts go, how much concrete goes in each hole, and whether removing the old fence is included. Our answer to the first is in the next section: at least four feet, on every fence.
How deep do fence posts need to be set in Calgary?
We set fence posts at least four feet (1.2m) deep to clear southern Alberta's frost line — that's our practice, not a fence code requirement, since a fence under the City's height threshold needs no permit and no inspection to enforce it. That gap — no permit, no inspector checking footing depth — is exactly where a price-driven install cuts corners. A shallow-set post looks identical to a correctly-set one on installation day; the difference shows up as heave after a couple of winters, once it's expensive to fix. Alberta's Building Code frost-depth standard for structural footings is the same 4ft/1.2m figure, enforced on decks because decks get inspected — confirmed here, August 2026 — we hold fence posts to the same depth on our own standard, not because the City checks.
Wind loading on solid panels and snow piling against fence lines are the other two site factors we account for at the design stage, before a render goes to you for approval — both push footing and post-spacing decisions in the same direction as frost depth, not against it.
How does the 3D render and permit process actually work?
Line, height, material, and every gate placement go into a 3D render first, so the fence you approve is the fence that gets built — not a sample panel and a guess at how it'll look running the length of your yard. If the design needs a City permit, that application and the inspection booking are ours to handle, not yours.
