No — an at-grade patio doesn't trigger a Building or Development Permit the way an elevated deck, pergola, or fence over height can. That's the one part of this project the City doesn't regulate, which means the quality of the build is entirely on the contractor, not a permit inspection catching problems for you.

Why does base preparation matter more than the concrete itself?

A patio poured on an under-prepared base will crack and heave within a few freeze-thaw cycles, regardless of how good the concrete mix is. We excavate and compact a granular base before pouring — the depth is sized to the specific soil and drainage conditions on your site, not a single number that applies everywhere.

What does drainage have to do with a patio holding up?

Water that pools against the house or sits under the slab is what drives frost heave, not the cold by itself. We grade every patio to shed water away from the foundation rather than toward it, and tie the drainage plan into whatever grading already exists in your yard.

At those per-foot rates, a 20x20 (400 sq. ft.) patio works out to roughly $2,400 to $3,200 in broom finish and $4,800 to $7,200 stamped. Site preparation and grading is its own line — on Calgary clay it's the part we'd least want a quote to skimp on, for the reasons above.

Concrete or pavers — which is right for a Calgary patio?

Concrete gives you one continuous surface with fewer joints for weeds or ants to work into, and it's normally the lower installed cost of the two. Shape, size, and finish get modeled in a 3D render before we excavate anything — the part that's hardest to picture from a sample board alone. Base preparation and drainage grading happen as part of the same project rather than a separate trade you have to coordinate, and if the patio connects to a deck or fence we're also building, it's planned as one job.
