How tall does my railing need to be?
If your deck surface is under 1.8m above grade, the railing must be at least 0.9m (3'-0") high; at 1.8m or higher, it must be at least 1.07m (3'-6"). This threshold is the same one that applies to decks generally — see our Calgary deck permit guide for the full permit context.

What's the baluster spacing rule?
The maximum gap between railing balusters is 100mm (4") — small enough that a child's head can't pass through.

Why aluminum or glass for a Calgary deck railing?
Aluminum and glass don't rot, crack, or need annual staining the way wood railings do, and both hold up to Calgary's chinook cycles — the repeated freeze-thaw swings that stress joints and fasteners on materials that expand and contract at different rates. Aluminum handles wind loading on solid or semi-solid panels with a lighter structure than wood; glass keeps sightlines open on a deck where the view is the reason you built it.
Do stairs need railings too?
Yes — the same height and baluster-spacing rules that apply to a deck surface apply to deck and exterior stairs, and a handrail is required on any stair with more than a couple of risers. We build stair and deck railings as one continuous system rather than two separate quotes, so the transition at the top and bottom of the stairs is designed once, not patched together.
How does the 3D render and permit process work?
You get a 3D render of your specific railing design — height, material, baluster spacing, and how it meets the stairs — before we build anything, and you approve it. If your deck or the railing itself needs a permit, we prepare the drawings, submit to the City, and schedule the inspection on your behalf.
