Fence cost in Calgary runs roughly $25 to $100 per linear foot installed, and most residential backyard projects land between $3,000 and $12,000 total. Below are the installed ranges by material, what moves a quote up or down, when the City requires a permit, how long fence installation takes, and what to check before you sign with any Calgary fence company.
Per HomeStars' 2026 Calgary fence price guide, as verified for our fences page, October 2026.
What is the cost of a fence per foot in Calgary?
Material sets most of the per-foot price. Chain link is the lowest, pressure-treated wood and vinyl sit in the middle, and cedar and composite sit at the top. All figures below are installed prices from Calgary-focused sources.
| Material | Per linear foot, installed | 100 ft (our arithmetic) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain link | $38 – $65 | $3,800 – $6,500 | Alberta Elite Construction |
| Pressure-treated wood | $55 – $85 | $5,500 – $8,500 | Alberta Elite Construction |
| Cedar (privacy) | $75 – $95 | $7,500 – $9,500 | Alberta Elite Construction |
| Premium cedar | $80 – $110+ | $8,000 – $11,000+ | Alberta Elite Construction |
| Vinyl | $60 – $90 | $6,000 – $9,000 | Alberta Elite Construction |
| Vinyl (second source) | $35 – $65 | $3,500 – $6,500 | Calgary Construction Network |
| Composite | $90 – $140 | $9,000 – $14,000 | Alberta Elite Construction |
Alberta Elite Construction's Calgary fence pricing guide (July 2026) and Calgary Construction Network's vinyl fence guide (April 2026), both checked October 2026. These are Calgary figures, not national ones. The 100 ft column is the per-foot range multiplied by 100: our derivation, not a figure either source publishes, and it excludes gates and removal.
Two notes on the vinyl numbers. The two sources disagree by about $25 per foot, and Alberta Elite's own article quotes $55 to $75 in its text against $60 to $90 in its table. Panel quality and post spacing explain most of that spread. Our wood vs. vinyl fence cost guide walks through the trade-off, and our vinyl fencing page covers what we install.
What does a whole fence project cost in Calgary?
HomeStars publishes total project ranges rather than per-foot prices. It is also the only source we found with a figure for ornamental metal, which is why ornamental appears here and not in the per-foot table.
| Fence type | Typical installed project cost |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $2,500 – $6,500 |
| Cedar | $2,500 – $5,500 |
| Iron or ornamental metal | $3,000 – $6,000 |
| Privacy fence (wood) | $4,500 – $8,000 |
| Wood fence (all types) | $3,000 – $14,000 |

What changes the price of a fence?
- Length. The per-foot price multiplies across the whole fence line, so length moves the total more than anything else.
- Material. From $38 per foot for chain link to $140 for composite at the top of the range.
- Height. Taller panels mean more material, and in Calgary a fence over 2 m (6'-6") in the rear yard needs a $579 development permit.
- Gates. A single walk gate runs $390 to $650 and a double driveway gate $800 to $1,500 or more. Automatic openers add more; see gates.
- Removal of the old fence. Removal and disposal runs $5 to $15 per linear foot.
- Slope and access. Calgary lots are rarely flat. HomeStars notes levelling a fence line can take a full day of prep before a post goes in, and tight access or rocky ground also raise the price.
- Labour. Labour typically makes up 40% to 60% of a Calgary fence quote.
Gate, removal and access figures per Alberta Elite Construction (its FAQ gives a lower walk-gate range of $250 to $600); levelling and labour share per HomeStars; permit fee per calgary.ca, October 2026.
Do you need a permit for a fence in Calgary?
Most fences need no permit. You need a development permit only if the fence is higher than 2 m (6'-6") in the rear yard, 1.2 m (4'-0") in the front yard or 0.75 m (2'-6") inside a corner visibility triangle, or if a gate is higher than 2.5 m (8'-2"). That permit costs $579, which includes the permit fee, advertising and a completion inspection, and takes 10 to 12 weeks.

How long does fence installation take in Calgary?
Most residential fence projects take two to four days on site, and spring through fall is the usual building season. A design that needs a development permit adds 10 to 12 weeks before work can start, so a fence you want up by May needs that answer by February.
Install time and season per Alberta Elite Construction; permit timeline per calgary.ca, October 2026.

Whichever fence company you hire, check these before you sign:
- A written, itemized quote: posts, panels or boards, gates, removal of the old fence and disposal listed separately, so two quotes can be compared line by line.
- A straight answer on post depth. HomeStars' Calgary guide says posts typically need to be set at least four feet deep to clear the frost line.
- Utility locates booked through Utility Safety Partners before any post hole is dug.
- The property line confirmed from a Real Property Report or survey before the line is set out, not after.
- A clear answer on the permit: whether your height and location need one, and who prepares and submits it.
- A design you can see before you sign: the fence running the full length of the yard, with every gate placed.
- Proof of liability insurance and WCB coverage for the crew working on your property.
- What is covered after the build, in writing, and for how long.
