Chain Link & Commercial Fence Cost in Calgary (2026 Prices)
Chain link fence cost in Calgary runs from about $18 per linear foot installed for a 4 ft residential galvanized fence to $42 per foot for 6 ft commercial 9-gauge at one Calgary installer, and up to $75 per foot for a full commercial spec with top rail and barbed-wire arms. Below are the per-foot ranges, what gates and privacy slats add, worked examples for yards and lots, and what to check before you sign.
All figures checked against the sources cited in each section, November 2026.
What does chain link cost per foot in Calgary?
Height, fabric gauge and coating set the per-foot price. Residential 4 ft galvanized is the lowest, vinyl-coated and 6 ft sit in the middle, and commercial 9-gauge with barbed-wire arms sits at the top. All figures are installed prices.
| Chain link type | Per linear foot, installed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Residential galvanized, 4 ft | $18 – $28 | BVM Builders (Calgary) |
| Residential galvanized, 6 ft | $22 – $34 | BVM Builders (Calgary) |
| Black or green vinyl-coated, 4 ft | $22 – $34 | BVM Builders (Calgary) |
| Commercial 9-gauge, 6 ft | $26 – $42 | BVM Builders (Calgary) |
| Chain link, typical installed | $38 – $65 | Alberta Elite Construction (Calgary) |
| Chain link, planning estimate | $40 – $70 | Maritime West Construction (Calgary) |
| Commercial 6 ft, top rail + barbed-wire arms | $50 – $75 | Fenced.ca (Canada-wide) |
BVM Builders' Calgary chain link price table (August 2026; includes Schedule 40 posts in concrete, top rail, tension wire and hardware), Alberta Elite Construction (July 2026), Maritime West Construction (July 2026; does not state height or spec) and Fenced.ca's chain link cost guide (Canada-wide, not Calgary-specific), all checked November 2026.
Why the spread? The lower Calgary figures are for a defined spec on an open, flat line. The higher ones are broad planning ranges or include heavier commercial components. Alberta Elite's own FAQ says chain link "starts around $25 per foot", below its table, which shows how much a simple job can differ from a typical one.
What do gates, slats and coating add?
| Add-on | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy slats | +$6 – $12 per linear foot | BVM Builders |
| Single walk gate | $350 – $650 | BVM Builders; Alberta Elite ($390 – $650) |
| Double drive gate | $700 – $1,500+ | BVM Builders ($700 – $1,400); Alberta Elite ($800 – $1,500+) |
| Black vinyl coating | 30% – 50% over galvanized | Fenced.ca |
| Removal of an old fence | +$5 – $15 per linear foot | Alberta Elite Construction |
BVM Builders, Alberta Elite Construction and Fenced.ca, checked November 2026. None of the sources publish a separate price for barbed wire.
Gates are where commercial quotes move most. A yard that needs trucks in and out usually needs a double drive or sliding gate; see gates and openers.
Worked examples: backyards, storage yards and lots
| Project | Per foot used | Total (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 ft backyard, 4 ft galvanized | $18 – $28 | $2,700 – $4,200 |
| 200 ft storage yard, 6 ft commercial 9-gauge | $26 – $42 | $5,200 – $8,400 |
| 200 ft yard, 6 ft full spec with barbed-wire arms | $50 – $75 | $10,000 – $15,000 |
| Add privacy slats to that 200 ft | $6 – $12 | +$1,200 – $2,400 |
Length multiplied by the sourced per-foot range: our derivation, before gates, removal or permits. For comparison, Alberta Elite puts 150 ft of 4 ft chain link on a flat lot at $3,750 to $6,750, and Fenced.ca puts 1,000 ft of 6 ft commercial at $25,000 to $45,000 turnkey.
Do you need a permit for chain link in Calgary?
For a home, most chain link fences need no permit. The City requires a development permit only if the fence is higher than 2 m (6'-6") in the rear yard, 1.2 m (4'-0") in the front yard or 0.75 m (2'-6") in a corner visibility triangle, or a gate is higher than 2.5 m (8'-2"). That permit is $579 and takes 10 to 12 weeks. Commercial and industrial sites follow the rules of their land use district, so for an 8 ft security fence we confirm the requirement before quoting.
Residential rules per calgary.ca, checked October 2026. More in our Calgary fence bylaw guide.
Chain link vs. other fence materials
Chain link is the lowest-cost way to secure a long line, which is why it is the standard for storage yards, compounds, schools and property lines. When the fence faces the street or a condo frontage, black vinyl-coated chain link or ornamental aluminum or steel looks cleaner. When the site needs no see-through, slats or a solid fence such as corrugated steel do the job. Prices for wood, vinyl and composite are in our Calgary fence cost guide.
What to check before you sign a chain link quote
- The spec in writing: fabric gauge, height, post size and spacing, top rail or tension wire, coating. Two quotes are only comparable when these match.
- Post depth for Calgary frost. One Calgary installer sets posts in concrete at 1.2 m; a Canada-wide guide gives 1.5 to 1.8 m for Calgary. Ask what depth your quote assumes.
- Gates sized to what uses them: walk gates for people, double or sliding gates for trucks and equipment.
- Utility locates booked through Utility Safety Partners before any post hole is dug.
- The property line confirmed from a survey or Real Property Report before the line is set out.
- Proof of liability insurance and WCB coverage for the crew on your site.
