Wood-Burning Fire Pits in Airdrie, Alberta
Arch & Bow builds wood-burning fire pits for homeowners in Airdrie, integrated with a deck or patio project. The City's own Fire Services Bylaw, not Calgary's, sets the numbers we build to.

No — Airdrie requires 3 metres of clearance from buildings, property lines, or combustible material, a full metre more than Calgary's 2-metre rule. The pit also has to have enclosed, non-combustible sides — brick, concrete block, or heavy gauge metal — rather than just sitting on non-combustible material the way Calgary's rule allows.

The size caps are close to Calgary's: height can't exceed 0.6m from grade to the top of the opening, and the opening itself can't exceed 1m across. A metal mesh spark arrestor with openings no larger than 1.25cm is required over the opening — finer than the general "spark screen" requirement Calgary uses, and worth building to from the start rather than retrofitting.
Does a propane fire pit follow the same rule?
Not exactly — Airdrie's bylaw doesn't directly address small propane fire pits using 20 lb bottles or smaller. The City's own guidance for those is to follow the manufacturer's minimum clearance instead of the 3-metre wood-burning rule, which means a propane unit and a wood-burning pit can end up governed by two different standards on the same property.
