Calgary Fire Pit Rules: The Full Calgary Fire Department Rulebook
There's no permit application for a wood-burning Calgary fire pit — instead, it has to comply with the Calgary Fire Department's published rules at all times, with fines attached if it doesn't. That's a different compliance model than a deck or pergola, and it's worth knowing the full list, not just the setback number everyone quotes.
Is a spark screen actually required by law?
Yes. A fire-safe mesh screen or spark guard is a legal requirement on every backyard fire pit in Calgary whenever it's burning, not a recommendation — it exists specifically to stop embers and sparks from reaching a neighbouring yard.

Where can a fire pit actually sit in the yard?
At least two metres from your property line, house, garage, or fence, and never underneath a tree, branches, or anything else overhead that could catch a spark. The pit itself has to be built into the ground, set on non-combustible material like brick or stone, or contained in a fire-proof container no taller than 0.75m.
What exactly can't I burn?
Only clean, dry, seasoned firewood is allowed. The banned list is more specific than most homeowners assume — it's not just garbage and yard waste.
| Not allowed | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Painted, treated, glued, or resin-coated wood | Releases toxic fumes when burned |
| Wet or green/fresh-cut wood | Smokes heavily instead of burning clean |
| Yard waste | Goes in your green cart instead |
| Garbage, rubber, or plastic | Toxic smoke, explicitly prohibited |
| Furniture | Named specifically in the CFD's own list |

What am I responsible for while it's burning?
Continuous supervision, and a way to put the fire out close at hand — a hose or a bucket of water counts. Burning is restricted to before midnight Sunday through Thursday, and before 1am on Friday and Saturday.
Does a fire ban override all of this?
Yes, completely — check calgary.ca/firebans before every fire, not just the first one of the season. A ban isn't a suggestion to be careful; it's a full stop until it's lifted.
What happens if a fire pit doesn't follow the rules?
Fines run up to $5,000 under Calgary's Community Standards bylaw for unsafe fires or burning prohibited materials. A neighbour's complaint goes to 311; an out-of-control fire is a 911 call, not a bylaw one.
