Composite Decks in Calgary: Cost, Lifespan and Winter Care
Composite decks in Calgary cost about $70 to $110 per square foot installed, so a 200 sq. ft. deck runs $14,000 to $22,000. They cost more than pressure-treated wood upfront, but they're rated for 25 years or more and don't need staining. Below are prices by size, how composite handles a Calgary winter, and what to check before you buy.
What does a composite deck cost in Calgary?
| Deck | Size | Installed | Per sq. ft. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 200 sq. ft. | $14,000 – $22,000 | $70 – $110 |
| Large (20x20) | 400 sq. ft. | $28,000 – $48,000 | $70 – $120 |
These ranges come from HomeStars' deck construction cost guide (Canada-wide) and Windsor Plywood's deck material guide, and the per-foot figures are our arithmetic. Height, stairs, railings and site access all move the final price. See our Calgary deck cost guide for the full breakdown.
How long does a composite deck last?
Expect 25 years or more, compared with about 15 to 20 years for pressure-treated lumber. Trex lists limited residential warranties of 25 to 50 years across its decking and railing lines. The term depends on the product, so ask for the warranty on the exact board in your quote.
How do you look after a composite deck in winter?
Use a plastic shovel. Trex's care page says a plastic shovel may be used on its composite decking, warns against metal shovels on its older lines, and notes that shovel scratches aren't covered by the warranty. It also allows calcium chloride or rock salt for ice, rinsed off when practical.
Those rules are for Trex boards. Other brands set their own, so check the care guide for yours before the first snow.
What should you check before buying composite?
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The warranty for your exact board | Terms vary by product line, so read the warranty for the board on your quote, not the brand's best one. |
| The framing under it | Composite boards sit on a separate frame. A long-life surface is only worth it if the structure below is built to match. |
| Winter care rules | Ask which shovel and ice melt the maker allows, since scratches from shovelling can fall outside the warranty. |
| Height and railings | The height above grade sets the permit and the guards, and railings can change the price as much as the boards do. |

Frequently asked questions
How much does a composite deck cost in Calgary?
A 200 sq. ft. composite deck typically runs $14,000 to $22,000 installed, about $70 to $110 per square foot. A 400 sq. ft. deck runs $28,000 to $48,000. Height, stairs, railings and the board line you choose all move the final price.
How long does a composite deck last?

Can you shovel a composite deck?
Yes, with a plastic shovel. Trex's care page says a plastic shovel may be used on its composite decking and warns against metal shovels on its older lines, because shovel scratches are not covered by the warranty.
Can you use ice melt on a composite deck?
Trex says calcium chloride or rock salt can be used to melt snow and ice on its decking, and to rinse it off when practical. Other brands may differ, so check the care guide for your board before winter.
Is composite worth it over pressure-treated in Calgary?
It's worth it if you plan to stay in the home and don't want to stain every few years. A 200 sq. ft. composite deck costs $14,000 to $22,000, compared with $8,000 to $16,000 in pressure-treated wood. If budget comes first, treated wood gets you the same size for less.
Do I need a permit for a composite deck in Calgary?
The material does not change the rule. An uncovered deck at or below 0.6 m above grade at every point does not need a building permit. A higher deck or any covered deck does.
