Pressure-Treated Decks in Calgary: Cost, Lifespan and Care

Pressure-treated decks in Calgary cost about $40 to $80 per square foot installed, so a standard 200 sq. ft. deck runs $8,000 to $16,000. They are the lowest-cost way to get a full-size deck, and they last about 15 to 20 years when they're kept sealed. Below are prices by size, when to stain, and what separates a treated deck that holds up from one that doesn't.

What does a pressure-treated deck cost in Calgary?

DeckSizeInstalledPer sq. ft.
Small, ground-level100 sq. ft.$5,000 – $9,000$50 – $90
Standard200 sq. ft.$8,000 – $16,000$40 – $80
Large (20x20)400 sq. ft.$14,000 – $29,000$35 – $73

These ranges come from our Calgary deck cost guide and Windsor Plywood's deck material guide. Height, stairs, railings and site access all move the final price, and larger decks cost less per square foot.

How long does a pressure-treated deck last?

Expect about 15 to 20 years. Composite is rated for 25 years or more, which is why it costs more upfront. If you won't keep up with staining, compare the two in our pressure-treated vs. composite guide before you choose.

When should you stain a new pressure-treated deck?

Published advice runs from one month to a year. Cottage Life notes that Canadian treated lumber has historically carried a factory water repellent that can take about a year to wear off. The simple test is water: if it soaks in, the wood will take stain. If it beads, wait. Test sunny and shaded boards, because shaded ones dry slower.

Use the same test each spring. When water soaks in again, the old finish is worn and it's time to recoat.

What makes a treated deck hold up?

DetailWhy it matters
Treat every cutBrush end-cut preservative on saw cuts and drilled holes during the build, as Wood Preservation Canada directs.
Use corrosion-resistant fastenersTreated wood calls for exterior-rated fasteners such as hot-dipped hardware, so ask what your builder is using.
Keep end grain out of standing waterPost bases and board ends should shed water, since end grain soaks it up fastest.
Plan the height firstThe height above grade sets the permit, the guards and how much the deck costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a pressure-treated deck cost in Calgary?

A standard 200 sq. ft. pressure-treated deck typically runs $8,000 to $16,000 installed, about $40 to $80 per square foot. A 100 sq. ft. ground-level deck runs $5,000 to $9,000, and a 20x20 deck runs $14,000 to $29,000, before stairs or premium railings.

How long does a pressure-treated deck last?

Pressure-treated lumber has an expected lifespan of about 15 to 20 years. Upkeep decides where a deck lands in that range, because a sealed deck takes on less water through Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles.

How soon can you stain a new pressure-treated deck?

Advice ranges from one month to a year, so go by the wood instead of the calendar. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it soaks in, the deck is ready. If it beads, wait and test again, and check shaded boards too because they dry slower.

Is a pressure-treated deck cheaper than composite?

Yes, upfront. A 200 sq. ft. pressure-treated deck runs $8,000 to $16,000 installed, compared with $14,000 to $22,000 in composite. Composite needs less upkeep and is rated to last longer, so the gap narrows over the life of the deck.

Do cut ends of pressure-treated wood need treatment?

Yes. Wood Preservation Canada says cuts and drilled holes expose untreated wood and should be brush-coated with an end-cut preservative during construction. The treatment does not always reach the core of the board, so a cut can leave the wood open to decay.

Do I need a permit for a pressure-treated deck in Calgary?

The material does not change the rule. An uncovered deck at or below 0.6 m above grade at every point does not need a building permit. A higher deck or any covered deck does.
