Deck Builder Calgary: Cost and What to Expect (2026)
Hiring a deck builder in Calgary for a standard 200 sq. ft. deck typically costs $8,000 to $16,000 in pressure-treated lumber and $14,000 to $22,000 in composite, installed. Below are the ranges by deck type and material, what moves a quote up or down, when a City permit applies, how the process runs from first visit to final inspection, and what to check before you sign with any deck contractor.
How much does deck construction cost in Calgary?
Installed cost depends mostly on size, material and height. Labour usually makes up 40% to 60% of the total, and per square foot, larger decks cost less because site prep and setup are spread over more area.
| Deck type | Size | Typical installed cost | Per sq. ft. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small ground-level, pressure-treated | 100 sq. ft. | $5,000 – $9,000 | $50 – $90 |
| Standard, pressure-treated | 200 sq. ft. | $8,000 – $16,000 | $40 – $80 |
| Standard, composite | 200 sq. ft. | $14,000 – $22,000 | $70 – $110 |
| Raised (up to 6 ft. elevation) | 200 sq. ft. | $12,000 – $24,000 | $60 – $120 |
| Large, composite (20x20) | 400 sq. ft. | $28,000 – $48,000 | $70 – $120 |
| Large, pressure-treated (20x20) | 400 sq. ft. | $14,000 – $29,000 | $35 – $73 |
Totals verified against HomeStars' 2026 deck construction cost guide, October 2026. These are Canada-wide ranges, not Calgary-only figures. The 400 sq. ft. pressure-treated range applies HomeStars' 40–50% figure to the composite range, and every per-square-foot column is our arithmetic on the totals.
Windsor Plywood's Calgary-region guide puts a typical deck lower, at $5,000 to $7,000 in pressure-treated and $8,000 to $11,000+ in composite, without pegging it to a specific size. Different scope, not a contradiction: use the table for a sized estimate and treat either source as a starting point, not a quote.

Composite or pressure-treated: which material costs more over time?
Pressure-treated lumber costs less to build and can be repaired board by board, but it needs staining or sealing every one to two years and has an expected lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Composite costs more upfront, skips the staining, and is rated for 25+ years. HomeStars notes most homeowners recover the upfront difference within 8 to 12 years through avoided maintenance. For the full side-by-side, see our composite vs. pressure-treated decking guide.
What drives the cost of a deck?
- Size. The biggest single factor, though the cost per square foot falls as the deck gets larger.
- Decking material. Composite runs roughly 40% to 60% more than pressure-treated for a similar deck.
- Height. A raised 200 sq. ft. deck (up to 6 ft.) runs $12,000 to $24,000 against $8,000 to $16,000 at a standard height, and anything over 0.6 m above grade needs a permit.
- Stairs. A ground-level stair run typically adds $1,000 to $3,000.
- Railings. Aluminum deck railings run $80 to $150 per linear foot installed. Our glass vs. aluminum railing guide compares the options.
- Permits. A building permit is $205.92; a development permit, when required, adds $550.00.
- Site conditions. Grade, access and what has to come out first all move a quote away from the baseline ranges.

Do you need a permit to build a deck in Calgary?
You need a City building permit if the deck is covered (a roof or pergola) or its surface is more than 0.6 m (2 ft) above grade at any point. It costs $205.92 and review takes about 7 days. A development permit adds 10 to 12 weeks if the deck sits at the front of the home, closer than 1.2 m to a side property line, closer than 6 m to the rear line, or in or within 6 m of the floodway.

How the process works with Arch & Bow
- Free on-site consultation. We measure the space, check grade and access, and talk through how you'll use the deck.
- Three design options. You see three designs as design renders, each with its own price, so you can compare layouts, materials and railings before choosing.
- Written quote. The design you pick is priced in writing, line by line.
- Permit, if your design needs one. We prepare the drawings, submit them to the City and book the inspection.
- Build and inspection. Footings, framing, decking, stairs and railings, built to the design you approved.
When should you book a Calgary deck builder?
Book over the winter. Most deck construction pauses from November to March because footings can't be poured in frozen ground, and deck builders are busiest from late May through August. HomeStars notes that booking for April, September or October often means faster scheduling. If your design needs a development permit, allow 10 to 12 weeks for it on top of design time, so a deck you want by May means design and permit work in February.

How to choose a deck builder in Calgary
Whichever deck company you hire, check these before you sign:
- A written, itemized quote — materials, labour, stairs, railings and permit fees listed separately, not one lump number.
- A design you can see before you sign. Ask what the deck will look like from the yard and from inside the house, not just a sketch of the footprint.
- A clear answer on the permit: whether your design needs one, and who prepares the drawings, submits them and books the inspection.
- Footings below frost. Calgary's deck checklist calls for standard footings at least 1.2 m (4 ft) deep.
- Guards built to code: at least 0.9 m high for a deck under 1.8 m above grade, 1.07 m at 1.8 m or higher, with no baluster gap over 100 mm.
- Proof of WCB coverage and liability insurance for the crew working on your property.
- The warranty in writing, covering both the workmanship and the decking manufacturer's terms.
- A realistic start date. Ask where you fall in their spring schedule before you pay a deposit.

The same checks apply to deck repair in Calgary: rebuilding, extending or adding stairs to an existing uncovered deck above 0.6 m needs a permit just like a new build. Our deck repair guide covers repair versus rebuild.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a deck builder cost in Calgary?
A standard 200 sq. ft. pressure-treated deck typically runs $8,000 to $16,000 installed, and the same size in composite runs $14,000 to $22,000. Labour usually makes up 40% to 60% of the total.
What does a deck cost per square foot?
Working from those installed totals, a 200 sq. ft. pressure-treated deck lands at roughly $40 to $80 per sq. ft. and composite at roughly $70 to $110 per sq. ft. Smaller decks cost more per square foot because site prep and setup are spread over less area.
How much does a 20x20 deck cost in Calgary?
A 20x20 deck is 400 sq. ft., which runs about $28,000 to $48,000 in composite. Pressure-treated typically comes in 40% to 50% lower, roughly $14,000 to $29,000, before stairs or premium railings.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Calgary?
You need a City building permit if the deck is covered or its surface is more than 0.6 m (2 ft) above grade at any point. It costs $205.92 and takes about 7 days. A development permit, when required, adds 10 to 12 weeks.

Is composite worth the extra cost?
Composite costs more upfront but skips the staining or sealing wood needs, and is rated for 25+ years against 15 to 20 for pressure-treated. It suits homeowners who won't keep up with yearly maintenance.
